Modern Hamptons: The Glenburn 30 – Chisholm

MODERN HAMPTONS
Glenburn 30 – Chisholm

Video transcript

Welcome to the Glenburn 30, a large single-storey home designed by Eden Brae Homes. I particularly love this floor-plan, because it has three family bedrooms on their own separate wing and the master suite at the back.

When I'm creating a display home I like to give it a theme. It gives me a direction to follow when I have to make all of those selections like you’re going to make with flooring and finishes and wall colours. For this particular home I decided on the theme Modern Hamptons. It just seemed to fit the architecture of the house so well, and of course it is a popular style. But instead of going for the traditional look of a Hamptons home, for this home I wanted a little bit of a modern twist. And it starts with this great kitchen.

Instead of having a profile in the door, a square set profile which is normal in Hamptons homes, I opted for a v-groove profile. It still has a definite coastal feel but that v-groove finish is so on trend and it adds great texture to the cabinetry. T o complement the modern profile of this door I wanted to go with a contemporary door handle choice, so I chose black handles and knobs because they add great contrast. They give a little bit of a traditional feel in a very modern way and they definitely add a little bit of bling to this kitchen in all the right ways. To complete the look it’s about selecting the right combination of appliances, sink and tap. To achieve this I went with the same Hamptons theme, I went for these traditional lines in the beautiful ovens of which I’ve put in two, and this great sleek gas cooktop, and of course, on the other side, I wanted a double bowls and a great goose neck tap. The black finish complements the handle choice and of course completes the look, in a very edgy and modern way.

When you're dealing with a large open-plan space like this, the right flooring choice is very important. Working with the Modern Hamptons theme I knew wanted a timber floor for this home, so I chose this bold textural timber finish. It’s quite busy with lots of knotted details and grain throughout, but it adds such interest to the floor. There’s a slight greeny grey undertone in the timber and that gave me the jump-off point for the colour of the walls and the kitchen making the whole space working cohesively together.

To continue that bold use of pattern and texture of the timber floors I went even busier with the bathroom floors. You can see that I've continued the greeny grey undertones from the timber into these great encaustic floor tiles, and definitely turned the volume up when it comes to pattern. But to give some relief to the room, because the floor is so busy, the walls are toned down, in what is a traditional Hamptons pattern, these elongated subways. And running them up half way on the wall with painted walls there above, again, it adds a design element that works with my Modern Hamptons theme, but it also creates a very warm and inviting bathroom space. And because continuity is important I’ve repeated the use of black detailing from the kitchen into the bathroom, with black statement tap ware, black door handles and black shower screen frame.

I love these panelled doors profile, and they work so well with the Modern Hamptons theme, and of course I’ve repeated the black detailing with matte black door hardware.

Or course the façade of your home is always an important decision and it has to work with the rest of the finishes throughout. The Modern Hamptons looks means that we have a finishes on the outside of this home, with the timber detailing, some nice trim, and of course the textural finish of brick. And we’ve added a panelled door which works with the panelled doors profile of the inside of the home. For the colour scheme I’ve looked actually at the colours of these recycled bricks and that led me to that greeny grey tone which we have used for the wall colour and the doors.
